When I designed Scandi Barn, I knew from the start that a minimalist and calm aesthetic of the room was important to me. Not only did this space need to be flexible in terms of usage (work, photoshoots, relaxation, entertainment, and more), but I also wanted a design that I could change to change the atmosphere of the room with the seasons. I like the space to lean more Scandi in winter so I can benefit from the joy of “hygge”, but in the warmer spring and summer months I wanted a Mediterranean feel with more natural textures, earth tones, etc. That is why I was on it interested in keeping the window treatments to a minimum so that they blend seamlessly with the surroundings throughout the repetitions of the space as the seasons change.
I was delighted to find Wovn Home: a direct to consumer window treatment store that was perfect during a pandemic as I could design and order everything from the comfort of my own home. Today I’m going to be reviewing Wovn Home’s custom shades and sharing my process of ordering and installing (so easy!) The custom Roman shades that I ordered from Wovn Home.
Individual window treatments can often be expensive, right? I know that in the past I have avoided them for precisely this reason. Still, some of the off-the-shelf options are never entirely right. Either they’re too long, too short, not the right color, or the width is slightly wrong, and you end up with a window covering that catches the eye for all the wrong reasons. Sounds familiar ?! If so, Wovn Home will be your window treatment savior!
The options
First off, it’s good for you to know that they offer bespoke shades and drapes (I’m installing some of the Wovn Home drapes in our guest room this spring so stay tuned!). Also, you can order your curtains or shades in a variety of styles to suit your aesthetic. For example, if you prefer a more traditional look, you can order your curtains in an elegant euro pleat or sunglasses in a ribbed style. As I said above, I wanted to continue the minimalist, Scandinavian feel with my custom hues, so I went for the flat hue.
I loved how the custom flat shades came out because they sit in the window opening and are perfectly flush with the wall. That was important to me because when designing the windows I decided not to have window ledges. This was done in order to distract the eye as little as possible from the striking and oh-so-beautiful windows of the Architectural Series that I selected from Andersen Windows. The Wovn Home shades complement the windows perfectly by gently toning down the modern, clean lines while adding texture, warmth and privacy.

For many of us, when we invest in bespoke window treatments, we don’t want to choose a fabric that is so specific that we could never redecorate it, right ?! At least for me as a serial renovator, this is definitely the case! So I loved that Wovn Home has a stylish, well-crafted selection of fabrics to choose from that doesn’t feel overwhelming. It’s easy to order samples (you get 5 for $ 5 and shipping is free) so you can try them out in your room before making your final choices.
I chose the Soft Snow linen and I love the way it feels – so haptic! We’re not overlooked and didn’t need blackout, so we opted for flat, privacy-lined sunglasses. I would recommend always using at least one custom shade privacy screen or you will see the entire cord behind the fabric. I didn’t want a stiff or formal looking shade so I was a little nervous about the privacy screen lining, but it works so well and the linen still has an effortless, casual feel to it.
installation
Something else I was nervous about but absolutely shouldn’t have been? Installation! To be honest, it was so, so simple. You simply drill two brackets in either side of the window and then just push and click the pre-made umbrella into the brackets. The final step is to screw the cable holder into the wall to route the chain and keep everything looking neat. Overall, I would definitely use Wovn Home again for custom shades and curtains. It’s so much easier than having people come and measure, then go somewhere to get samples, go back to order, and then have more people come and install them for you. Saved me money and time, and in the end I got a product that I love!
