Sunscreen is one of the products we should be using all year round, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors. But not all sunscreens are created equal. Chemical and mineral SPFs differ in one key way – chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin to neutralize UV rays, while mineral sunscreens sit on the skin to deflect UV rays. I like to use mineral sunscreens because they are not so easily absorbed and are generally more comfortable for people with sensitive skin. However, in the past it has been difficult to find options that didn’t feel heavy or cast a white cast. For context, I have oily skin and a medium-light tone with neutral to yellow undertones. After trying my fair share of sunscreens, I found six that work well for me. Today I am sharing my favorite mineral sunscreens for all skin types.
Vivaiodays turmeric broad-spectrum sun protection SPF 30
This sunscreen caught my eye because it’s water-resistant and made from 100% natural ingredients like marigold, jojoba, sea buckthorn, and turmeric, which the brand says can help pProtect skin from long-term damage from UV radiation. Of all the sunscreens on this list, this formula is the most hydrating and has a slightly thicker texture than the others. I recommend applying a little at a time so that you can really blend it in. This oil-based sun protection factor is a great option for people with dry skin or anyone looking for some extra moisture.
ILIA Super Serum Skin Tone SPF 40
The ILIA Super Serum Skin Tint is a fan favorite in the ABM team. After trying it I can absolutely understand why. The SPF serum is light, oil-free, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic, so it won’t clog your pores. It blends in seamlessly and is available in 30 different shades (and more). I find this formula very clear. It helps to blur imperfections easily but makes your skin look natural which I love. This is a nice option for a makeup look without makeup.
Eleven by Venus Williams Unsurpassed Sun Serum SPF 35
I was talking about this sunscreen In front and i still enjoy it very much. Developed in collaboration with tennis world champion Venus Williams, this sunscreen is specially designed to be inclusive and meet the needs of many different skin types and tones. The formula has a water-like texture that dries to a semi-matte finish, leaving your skin smooth yet hydrated. I’ve worn it on my own, but it works well under makeup too.
Unsun Mineral Tinted Sunscreen for Face SPF 30
This formula was developed by Katonya Breaux (who, by the way, is the mother of musician Frank Ocean!) To provide women of color with sunscreen options that blend seamlessly without leaving a white cast. The formula comes in three shades. I went for the light / medium option, which is a perfect match for my skin tone. This formula is slightly dewy and fragrance-free; it also helped neutralize some redness on my face.
MD Solar Sciences Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Mineral Crème
What I like about this sunscreen is that it has a very thin, slightly mousse-like texture that dries completely matt. It actually reminds me of a makeup primer because it has a very light blurring effect and leaves my skin very smooth. According to the brand, even people with the most sensitive of skin can use it.
Hynt Beauty SUN PREP broad spectrum SPF 25
This award-winning sunscreen may be my all-time favorite. The formula is out of this world. It doesn’t feel like sunscreen at all. It fEels like a nice, lightweight moisturizer. It is quickly absorbed, leaves no oily residue or whiteness and smells like a dream. It’s expensive though, so I’ll try to buy a bottle when it’s on sale.
As the saying goes, the best type of sunscreen is the one you actually wear. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments below! xo, Amanda
