About the book: On June 29, 1978, Bob Crane, known as Hogan’s heroes Fans like Colonel Hogan was found brutally murdered in his Scottsdale, Arizona apartment. His eldest son, Robert Crane, was called to the scene. In these poignant memoirs, Robert Crane talks about that terrible day and how he lived with the unsolved murder of his father. But that plot is just a thread in his story of growing up in Los Angeles, his efforts to balance the good and dirty sides of his famous father and his own fascinating life. Crane began his career writing for Oui Magazine and spent many years promoting celebrities for playboyStars like Chevy Chase, Bruce Dern, Joan Rivers and even Koko, the signing gorilla. As a result of a violent encounter with the Occupation of Canada SCTV, he found himself putting his notepad and tape recorder aside to be hired by John Candy – first as a time and time again publicist; then as a full-time assistant, confidante, screenwriter and producer; and finally as one of Candy’s pallbearers. Crane’s humor and perseverance shine through disappointment, loss, and heartbreak. Beyond the big stars and the behind-the-scenes revelations, this compelling account of death, survival, and renewal under the shadow of the Hollywood sign makes a profound statement of the desire for love and permanence in a life where these things keep disappearing. Alternating shocking and uplifting, crane is an unforgettable and deeply human story.
