About the book: Charles Boyer: The French Lover is the first English-language biography of Boyer in almost forty years. Writer John Baxter artfully presents the often tragic life of this often overlooked but deeply formidable French actor. Baxter tells how Boyer (1899–1978) established himself in French theater and cinema, confidently switched from silent film to sound and made a name for himself as a romantic leading actor in Hollywood in the early 1940s. During the Second World War, Boyer put his career on hold in order to become politically active for his occupied homeland. Upon his return to the stage and screen, Boyer easily adapted to the roles of post-war characters in Europe and the United States. He entered television as both a producer and a performer in the 1950s, and developed as a comedy performer in the 1960s. He was nominated four times for the Academy Awards and was honored only once by the Academy – a special honor given for his activities on behalf of France during World War II.
