Celebrated for her ride between the line of alt-folk and bluegrass, Ana Silvera’s ‘Early Frost’ is another feather in the cap for this progressive songwriter. The tune sets a stunning vocal performance from Silvera front-and-centre, dueting with Alan Hampton, whose harmonies with her are especially gorgeous. It’s a cross-country performance, with Hampton recording in Los Angeles and Silvera in Copenhagen. A slice of reality for artists during the early pandemic era, they more than compensate for distance covered with a heart-rending delivery. The song is about a strain in a seemingly fine romance, and its music video accompaniment beautifully illustrates a shared heartache.
Silvera says, “Alan is an incredible singer-songwriter in his own right, but also well known for his harmony singer and double bass playing with artists including Fiona Apple and Andrew Bird. We recorded his vocals in the early days on the pandemic, with him recording from his house in LA and me in Copenhagen.”
The video was co-directed by Silvera with Liv Anastasia Ikkala. Ikkala also acted as director of photography, with additional shots from Silvera and Jasper Høiby.
