Musicians do demos. luthier? Sometimes they just have to pull it out. In our new sketchbook section, we take a look at when inspiration comes. First: A look into the mind of pioneering luthier Michiro Matsuda.
When he received an order for a double-neck electric guitar – one neck sitar, the other six-string – he started thinking about bridges. “I had the idea of using a Gotoh sitar saddle,” he says. “And I’ve been thinking how I can adapt it to an archtop style bridge with a customization system on this sketch. I do this kind of brainstorming with a person sometimes.”
Matsuda’s pencil drawings evolved into the finished structure you see here. “It was a special project, something between guitar and art.”
