Find out what you don’t know about Canadian rock threesome Triumph even if you’re a fan of the band in the feature documentary Triumph: Rock ‘n’ roll machine.
Directed by Banger Films’ Sam Dunn and Marc Ricciardelli, this fantastic film follows the beginnings of the band, even before Triumph began, as drummer, vocalist and lead architect of the band, Gil Moore, talks about his early days playing in various rock bands and bassist Mike Levine seduced into his vision of a power trio and then found guitarist Rik Emmett.
Triumph, the band they form, showcased a unique style of hard-rocking, melodic melodies and put on a dazzling light and effects show—before they stopped playing high schools in their Ontario area altogether. With Moore’s drive, Levin’s business background (he worked for a label before joining Triumph) and Emmett’s guitar pyrotechnics, vocals and songwriting, this was a band that never stopped striving for greatness and betterment, and certainly did.
The film contains some amazing footage – live, on the road, in the studio, while making videos. There’s also commentary from the likes of original Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach, actor and comedian Brian Posehn, and the Trailer Park Boys (with one member making the wry comment that Triumph and Rush are the same band since we’ve never seen them that both play at the same time). We also hear from devoted superfans who speak at length about the band and what their music means to them.
We dive into the highs and lows of Triumph including Rik Emmett’s departure and its aftermath, followed by one off reunions and the band’s Fanfest held in 2019 at Metalworks Studio, owned and operated by Moore since 1978. A reunited triumph surprises the select superfans in attendance by showing up and playing unannounced. It’s quite a short, emotional set…complete with pyro, of course.
I’m a real sucker for band documentaries, usually I don’t even care that much who the band is. And while I’m certainly nowhere near as crazy about Triumph as your fans here, I’ve learned a lot about what Gil Moore, Mike Levine and Rik Emmett have accomplished. Now I like their music even more. And her Pyro too.
