When we moved into our unrenovated 1990’s home, we embarked on a year-long journey to update the look of each and every room.
I immediately envisioned turning this boring office into a colorful art studio that I could share with my two kids.

This space brings me incredible joy! Ever since I was young and broke and living in a loft apartment, I’ve always found a way to build an art studio into my space.
In some of my first apartments, I did without a living room to accommodate all my painting supplies. priorities, right?
Now that I have two young children who love art, I am excited to share this space and create memories together. (My dress is from Sezane)
Before + After
Here’s a photo of what the room looked like when we bought our house… and what it looks like today! We were able to use the base of the existing cabinets and build on top to bring the shelves up to the ceiling.
We removed the fairing and reinstalled it for a professional built-in look. After that we painted the cabinets using this method and then painted the walls to match.
I found this little easel at a real estate sale and the chandelier on Amazon. This is the room where I keep all of our acrylic paints, art supplies, and all of my pottery supplies.
In the photo above you can spy on my clay bags hiding under the desk. It’s a magical creative space. The best part is that my kids and I share the space equally.
It causes a lot of clutter, but it’s totally worth it. (Resist the urge to put in a “it’s a nice mess,” haha).
I spent a lot of time mixing paints and pouring them into squeeze bottles. A lot of people have asked me if it’s for aesthetic or functional reasons. Honestly, it’s so much of both.
I find them so handy to use and they are also so much nicer than bottles of craft paint.
I also collect nicer acrylic paints (and also oil paints). My favorite brands of fancy acrylic paints are Golden and Nova Color.

They’re expensive though, and I really enjoy using craft paint on a large number of the projects we use, like stuff for childhood magic and art with my kids.
My baby changing station is really my pride and joy! I’ve spent my ENTIRE adult life wishing for such a perfect little gift wrapping station. i love it so much You can also see my pottery glazes and semi-finished pottery are kept here.
This is all my old leftover wallpaper. Honestly, I just love it as a decoration. The patterns together make my eyes very happy!
If you have any questions about creating your own art studio or the materials I use, I’d love to chat in the comments. xx- Elsie
