At this year’s Fretboard Summit, violin making legends Michael Gurian (Gurian Instruments) and Dick Boak (formerly Martin Guitars) presented us with a manuscript. It was a fully assembled book of stories – some hilarious, some heartbreaking – from the who’s who of instrument making. From the moment we started browsing through it, we knew we were getting into book publishing. You can now pre-order the book here. Shipping will take place in December 2022.
An instrument maker’s guide to madness and redemption: behind-the-scenes stories from the instrument making and repair community is a soft-bound book with over 120 pages of collected stories. It includes fairy tales by the likes of John Monteleone, Steve McCreary (Collings Guitars), Grit Laskin, Kathy Wingert, George Gruhn, Andy Powers (Taylor Guitars), John Greven and others.
This is not a luthier’s guide; there is nothing technical in it. It’s for anyone obsessed with handmade instruments and their makers, and wondering at all the blood, sweat and tears that go into the craft. It’s a snapshot of the quirky, obsessive nature of our favorite makers and we love it.
