Canyon Village

Old Faithful

As you may have guessed, Old Faithful is the area around the world-famous geyser Old Faithful. This area is an exciting place to stay. It has three lodging options: Old Faithful Inn, Old Faithful Snow Lodge, and Old Faithful Lodge.

Visiting Yellowstone doesn’t have to mean staying in a guestroom or cabin. Yellowstone National Park also has some fantastic campgrounds and RV parks, which we will explore briefly. You’ll find camping spots in Grant Village, near Mammoth Hot Springs, Canyon Village, Tower Fall, and Bridge Bay. There are 12 different campgrounds spread across Yellowstone National Park, and these are the four best.

Canyon Campground is beautifully set in a pine forest in Canyon Village. You have laundry, food storage, firewood, and trash collection facilities. Plus, you’ll be ideally located to explore the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

Grant Campground is located in Grant Village on the southern shores of Yellowstone Lake. It has plenty of facilities, with wheelchair-accessible areas as well. You’ll have multiple stores, a restaurant, a gas station, and a visitor center.

Mammoth Campground is the only campground in Yellowstone National Park that is open all year. Mammoth Campground will be your only option if you visit Yellowstone in winter. Cody Wyoming

Cody is an excellent base if you want a wild west feel located near Yellowstone park entrance at the East Gate. Cody, Wyoming is located just 52 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, and the founder, Buffalo Bill Cody made sure that anyone visiting Yellowstone from the Eastern United States, had to drive through his town. Those staying in Cody can reach the park’s East Entrance along a scenic section of byway called North Fork Highway.

Cody has a cowboy-style atmosphere and plenty of traditional buildings to admire. Especially at the Old Trail Town, a re-created 19th-century frontier town. Cody is also packed with things to do, including the Buffalo Bill Center of the West – a massively popular, award-winning museum dedicated to Buffalo Bill and exploring old western history. Cody is a hotspot for museums and has three more: the Cody Dug Up Gun Museum, The Historic Cody Mural and Museum, and the Cody Firearms Research Museum. Don’t forget to venture out to the Buffalo Bill Dam and Visitor Center as well, as the reservoir is spectacular.

Another strong point in Cody’s favor is its airport, Yellowstone Regional Airport. It is easy to reach if you fly domestically, which is nice and straightforward. Just rent a car when you arrive, and you are ready to tackle Yellowstone.

Chamberlain Inn

The Chamberlain Inn is an excellent boutique hotel located in downtown Cody that is walking distance to many of its major attractions. Each room has its own theme taking you back to the turn of the 20th century. Hemingway stayed here when he made a base in Cody and you can even stay in his room that has been restored to what it was like during his time at the Chamberlin.

The Comfort Inn Cody is newly renovated and located in the Buffalo Bill Village. It offers a fantastic hot breakfast and is within walking distance to downtown. There is free parking on site and there is a gift shop right next door. This hotel is great for road trippers and we thoroughly enjoyed our time here and the rooms were quite modern. Buffalo Bill’s Irma Hotel is the original hotel in Cody and if you want to have a nostalgic visit, stay in the hotel that was built by Buffalo Bill Cody himself. Cody Hotel

West Yellowstone

West Yellowstone is one of the best places to stay near Yellowstone National Park. The small town is located in southern Montana and is closest to the national park’s West Entrance. It is an ideal base to explore major attractions like Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone since these spots are just a short drive away.

West Yellowstone itself is small but has a handful of things to do and see, making it a perfect base for a short break.

The Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is a great option. It is an animal refugee center that offers visitors the chance to get up close to its residents that have been deemed unfit for release back into the wild.

There’s Yellowstone Giant Screen, a cinema specializing in a film on Yellowstone’s scenery – a great way to get excited about venturing into the national park. Gardiner is a beautiful little town north of Yellowstone National Park and situated in Montana. It is best known for its iconic bridge, which spans the Yellowstone River, and its brilliant access to the North Entrance. It is worth noting that the North Entrance is the only one that remains open all year round. Gardiner is a fantastic base if you are visiting the national park in winter.

Since Gardiner is split in half by a river, it might not surprise you that one of the best things to do in the town is to go whitewater rafting. There’s a whitewater rafting tour operator on Scott Street. If you want an exhilarating day out, you should drop by. Prefer more educational, museum-style activities? There’s also the Heritage and Research Center to visit. The center has made it its mission to collect all the important cultural and natural history of Yellowstone National Park. You can learn about everything from its first Native American Indian population to artifacts found on archeological digs.

Some attractions, like Old Faithful, are quite a long drive away, so be prepared for long days of driving. Like West Yellowstone, Gardiner has its own airport (Gardiner Airport), located just 2.4 miles up the highway. They are so small and close together that they are frequently treated as a singular destination – hence the name Cooke City-Silver Gate. The area is a pretty niche place to stay, to be completely honest, and it won’t suit everyone. It is a long drive from major attractions like Old Faithful. It is best for those planning on driving through Yellowstone National Park as a road trip and looking for a place to stop, not use as a base.

Saying that the towns are just a 30-minute drive from Lamar Valley. If you’ve already seen the attractions in western Yellowstone, you’ll love the hikes and wildlife spotting in Lamar Valley. The towns also have their own attractions, including the Montana Museum. This museum tells the history and best stories about its local communities, ranging from mining and geology to social history, like an exhibition on ‘Women and Winter’. It is a great rainy day activity, especially since indoor activities are usually a rare find in and around Yellowstone National Park.
