Album number three (ie III) by the Winery Dogs (singer/guitarist Richie Kotzen, drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist Billy Sheehan) is based on the monster trio’s ability to simultaneously pound lightning-fast riffs, dig a soulful groove and deliver catchy choruses. From a brief reading of Kotzen’s writings (he wrote them all for III), we are taken through the ups and downs of romantic relationships, with much of the album’s 10 songs revolving around this theme.
“Xanadu” opens with characteristic big riffs and showcases Kotzen’s guitar prowess, while “Pharaoh” spotlights Billy Sheehan’s unique, stirring bass playing and allows plenty of verse space, which these three don’t often allow. The slow sweep of “Lorelei” really lets the band slow down to make a mark. It features Kotzen’s best voice, complete with a fiery falsetto.
“Red Wine” is a big rocker, with the band using great harmonic vocals as they do throughout. In a moat of riffs with drummer Mike Portnoy in the bag, the trio evoke a solid, good rock punch to the end III. Kotzen, Portnoy and Sheehan might be “old” dogs when it comes to their reputation for chops; At IIItranscending their collective musicality with a massive slew of songs to flesh out each player’s strength and amplify a steamy chemistry that’s further alchemized with each record.
