Tim Frick knew from a young age that he wanted to build instruments. As a teenager, he began building basses for himself. He eventually studied under famed archtop luthier Tom Ribbecke, worked at Gary Brawer’s San Francisco repair shop, and then spent years alongside luthier legend Frank Ford at Gryphon Guitars in Palo Alto, California.
Today, Frick resides in Portland, Oregon, where he repairs guitars and builds his own archtop guitar creations. In episode 75 of the podcast, Tim tells us about his journey, why he mainly uses hand tools and what he thinks about voicing archtops. We also talk about Japanese hand tools and much more.
