Jon Gomm is a virtuoso singer-songwriter whose prodigious command of advanced acoustic guitar techniques is paired with thought-provoking lyrics and a dry, often anarchic, sense of humor.
In this episode of “Life on the Fretboard,” Gomm shares with host Michael Watts his thoughts on the guitar being part of his identity as well as a haven, his distaste for sonic paradigms and deeply seedy guitar shops, the importance of Kurt Cobain and Michael Schützt bootlegging and the vulnerabilities of practicing at airports.
Gomm also talks about the role the instrument has played in his life as a cathartic, healing element – especially in times of loss and grief. Something that maybe we can all identify with.
There are a few adult languages and listeners outside the Leeds/Bradford metropolitan area might benefit from this brief glossary of terms:
“To be excited” – very excited, even excited.
“To flap around“ – Traveling at high speed, often with no clear destination.
Life on the Fretboard is a Michael Watts production for Fretboard Journal and this episode would not be possible without the kind support of McNally Guitars and Microtech Gefell Microphones.
