Memorial Weekend starts off with a bang as a 264-lot “American Patriot” auction, featuring perhaps the most significant engraved print in U.S. history, opens at Early American History Auctions Saturday, May 27.
Paul Revere’s original hand-colored, copper-plate engraving of the “Boston Massacre” takes center stage at the event that features historical prints, paintings, autographs, documents and Americana, many coming from the impressive collection of the late Ambassador William Middendorf II, one of America’s foremost historical collectors.
The Boston Massacre was a deadly riot that occurred on March 5, 1770, on King Street in Boston. It began as a street brawl between American colonists and a lone British soldier, but escalated to a chaotic, bloody scene with British soldiers killing five American colonists.
Paul Revere encouraged anti-British attitudes by etching the now-famous engraving depicting British soldiers callously murdering American colonists. The event, and Revere’s depiction of it, galvanized outrage that helped lead to revolution. Presale estimate for Revere’s work is $150,000-$200,000.
