As the global climate crisis continues to cause the planet’s oceans to warm and rise, putting citizens of island (and low-lying) nations at risk, Rihanna makes an urgent appeal to world leaders to escalate the crisis. In a tweet Tuesday morning (June 20) in which he called US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and World Band President Ajay Banga, the “Work” singer explained that now is the time to act.
“Hey @SecYellen & #AjayBanga“Will you join @miaamormottley and speak up for the communities hardest hit by climate change?” wrote the singer, who was born on the Caribbean island nation of Barbados. “We need your bold commitment to finance and debt reform. Addressing climate change with @ClaraLionelFdn – now it’s your turn.”
Rihanna also shared a link to Global Citizen’s efforts to protect the planet and end poverty through its Power Our Planet initiative.
Rihanna isn’t new to the message of urgency on climate action. Last year, she donated $15 million to the cause through her Clara Lionel Foundation. At the time, she announced donations to 18 climate justice organizations working in seven Caribbean countries and the United States, including the Climate Justice Alliance, the Indigenous Environmental Network and the Movement for Black Lives.
“Climate disasters, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, are not affecting all communities equally, as communities of color and island nations are bearing the brunt of climate change,” she said in a statement accompanying the announcement. She also pointed out that inequality is the reason behind her foundation, which is named after her grandparents and prioritizes both climate resilience and working for climate justice.
