This week’s double-header is all about Fretboard Summit 2023, taking place August 24-26, 2023 at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. As I hope you know, the Summit is a three day guitar show and festival curated by Fretboard Journal. All weekend long you can meet some of your favorite players and luthiers, try new products and have fun. The cast includes Tommy Emmanuel, jeff parker, Jorma Kaukonen, About Mardot and numerous others… and you are invited.

We start the podcast by talking about some new Summit additions and updates, including many that aren’t currently being announced on the site.
At 3:36pm we interview luthier Creston Lea from Creston Guitars. He has attended every summit that Fretboard Journal has hosted and shares some of his fondest memories over the years. Then we get a recap of last year’s Nickel Wound Chef competition, which pitted Creston against Duncan Price in an hour-long Partscaster setup (think Iron Chef, but for guitar making). Finally, Creston tells us about his current guitar builds, what it’s like when Gene Parsons installs B-benders on one of your guitars, and more.

At 45:32 we speak to luthier Micah Bruce from Bruce Guitars. Micah is making a very special Harmony H-49 inspired electric guitar that one lucky Summit attendee will go home with. We chat about Summit construction, the art of laminating, how modern luthiers are using CNCs in their designs, reworking vintage Martin guitars, and what other guitars Micah will be bringing to Chicago. It’s a great conversation.

We still have a very limited number of 3-day unlimited Summit Passes available that include all weekend programming and concerts. Just want to come to the guitar making showcase and guitar shop? Tickets are available now for $30. They will also be available at the door.
