Camila Cabello is a little shy to say it, but she’s been in her “health and wellness” era this year.
Ahead of L’Oréal Paris’ Women of Worth event in Los Angeles Thursday, where she graced the red carpet alongside the likes of Eva Longoria, Helen Mirren, Aja Naomi King, and Andie MacDowell, the singer spoke to Rolling Stone about focusing on her self-care routine this year.
“This is really boring and annoying because I would have been annoyed if somebody said this, but I have really been on a health and wellness journey this year,” she tells Rolling Stone.
Part of that “journey” has been her continued partnership with L’Oreal. Cabello has been an ambassador and global spokesperson for the brand since 2017, and the artist says she’s become a “really big skincare junkie,” shouting out L’Oreal’s “Bright Reveal Broad Spectrum Daily UV Lotion” as a favorite product to keep her skin in the best form.
Aside from working with L’Oreal Paris, Cabello reveals that she has also been in the studio lately, though she gets coy when talking about her upcoming album. What she will share is that she’s “scheming” and pulling inspo from all forms of art. “To me, what produces different output is having new input,” she says. “That’s what’s inspired me.”
From getting ready to watch Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour film to recently reading Emily Ratakojwski’s recent book, here’s what else Cabello had to share with Rolling Stone:
Hi Camila, ¿cómo estás?
Things are good. I’m a little physically tired but everything is amazing. I can’t complain.
We need some rest girl. It’s time for the holidays.
We sure do.
I was reading an interview you did earlier this year where you were like, “I don’t know go to bed without washing my face.” I wanted to ask, what are some of your favorite L’Oreal products to keep your skin so slay?
Well, thank you, darling. I definitely use SPF every day even if there’s no visible sun out. If it’s light outside, I’m using SPF, [especially] the new L’Oreal Paris Bright Reveal Broad Spectrum Daily UV Lotion with antioxidants. That’s very exciting to me because I love my sunscreen every day.
And they have a new L’Oreal Paris Bright Reveal 12% Niacinamide Dark Spot Serum. I’ve actually become a really big skincare junkie so I really do know that these ingredients are really good. We need our Niacinamide. We need our retinol. Lately, I’ve been doing some gua sha every day.
You’ve partnered with L’Oreal on an event that celebrates Women of Worth, and I wanted to ask you who are some of the women who inspire you right now?
That’s a great question. Everybody obviously knows that my mom is like my best friend. But to spice it up, this woman popped up in my mind is Salma Hayek: she’s a baddie and a badass. I love this interviewer, this journalist who I really love, called Krista Tippett. I also am going to say Beyonce, because I’m very excited for this Renaissance movie.
I’m very excited for that too. And obviously, we’re nearing the end of 2023. What are some of the biggest lessons that you’ve learned for yourself this year?
That’s a great great, great question. I didn’t grow up eating healthy, or eating vegetables really. So I’ve really learned the value of food being medicine this year. Eating better does make you feel better. They’re not lying about that.
I feel like in Latino households, there’s just never vegetables in the house.
No, there isn’t! White people are not lying when they say “eating better to feel better.” My dad’s breakfast is a pancito with café con leche, and I’m like “There’s no protein in that shit!”
Speaking of eating well, the holidays are coming up. What plans do you have in mind for the end of the year?
I love to love to follow the rhythm of the seasons as much as I can. I think it’s a good time to stay indoors more, and transition to some cozy inside hangs. Put some movies on, do a little cooking, some baking. I feel like the summer, I was really outside and I’m still kind of outside. But you know, I’m trying to just hibernate a little bit more. I love a good Mexican hot chocolate and I’ll put a little cinnamon in there.
I know you’re a big reader. Is there anything that you’ve read this year that really stood out to you?
So. Many. Things. Damn, I don’t even know if I could just name one. I really liked Emily Ratajkowski’s book “My Body.” Facebook “My Body” — that was a great book.
And did you read Britney’s book?
I have not but I’d be really curious to read that because I’ve heard it’s super interesting.
I feel like if I was talking to you and I didn’t ask about music I would be so mad at myself. It’s been over a year and a half since Familia. Have you started planning out CC4?
Oh darling, of course. I’m always scheming but I won’t say too much about it because I love a calculated surprise.
Is she ready though?
Oop! Can’t say, can’t say anything.
Any idea on how it will sound?
I can’t say anything!
How do you get yourself into the right mindset when it comes to making CC4, if you’re not going to share about the music. What’s keeping you in it?
It always has to be about challenging myself and doing something new. So really consuming a lot of new art and a lot of new references. A lot of new music, new movies, new novels, new photography. To me, what produces different output is having new input. That’s what’s inspired me.
I’m excited about what’s to come. What’s keeping you inspired in the music world lately?
Um, let’s see. Let me go on my Spotify right now. I got my mix. I love PinkPantheress. I always love Drake. I love Beyonce. I will always love Beyonce. I love my afrobeats.
Which Afrobeats artists are you listening to?
I love Tyla’s song “Water.” She also is literally insanely gorgeous. I love Ayrah Starr. I love Asake. I love Fireboy DML. I’m a big Afrobeats girl for sure.
