The world-renowned auction house Kruse GWS Auctions has announced a very special auction honoring the House of de Medici, the Italian Royal Monarchy that consolidated power in the Republic of Florence, Italy, in the first half of the 15th century under Cosmos de’ Medici. For the first time in royal history, an extraordinary collection of jewelry and artifacts from the 16th and 17th centuries will be offered. The collection is a look at the lineage of a family who ruled Florence and later Tuscany from the period of 1434 to 1737. They provided the Roman Catholic Church with four popes (Leo X, Clement VII, Pius IV, and Leon XI) and married into the Royal families of Europe, including Catherine de Medici, who married King Henry II of France, becoming Queen of France from 1547 to 1559.
The Medici family’s popularity endured for centuries. The family was always consumed by a passion for the arts and for letters and buildings. They were more than ostentatious patrons of the arts but rather the most magnificent of such patrons that the West had ever seen. Historians, as well as collectors, will find the stories behind each piece one of compelling provenance and European importance.
One of the most intriguing assemblages of the collection of Royal artifacts in the upcoming auction includes period 17th and 18th-century antique jewelry and accessory pieces made from solid gold, including solid gold folding lorgnette (opera glasses), blue sapphire and guilloche enamel convertible pocket watch/pendant with the royal crown motif and diamonds and 18K gold, emerald and enamel pendant with a miniature sculpture of a child with a she-goat representing the “Children of Medici” family and a symbol of innocence. No other modern-day jewelry can ever compare to such treasures.
Additional highlights worth noting include rare and large Colombian emeralds, fancy intense natural diamonds and some of the most famously colored gemstones in the world, GIA-grade diamonds, and one-of-a-kind custom-made pieces of jewelry being produced from rare gemstones. Additionally, an enthusiast of Royal history will also have a chance to bid on a personally guided tour of Rome with the Prince of Medici.
The auction also features ancient coins, automobiles, jewelry, and art collections from Prince Lorenzo de Medici, an internationally known artist and businessman.
Brigitte Kruse, Founder and Lead Auctioneer of Kruse GWS Auction, stated, “The de Medici Royal family represents centuries of some of the most important moments in the grand history of Italy. It is our honor to host one of the most significant collections to ever represent a Royal lineage as important to the country as that of the de Medici family. The trust bestowed upon us by the Medici family and the history it represents is not taken lightly. We look forward to an extraordinary auction event on March 2, 2024, beginning at 7:00 A.M. PST. “
Online bidding began February 14, 2024, at 12:00 AM PST, and live bidding begins Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 07:00 AM PST.
