Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update took aim at Donald Trump‘s rally earlier in the day in Coachella, California, of all places, as well as his running mate’s awkward, repeated refusal to admit that Trump lost the 2020 election.
“Donald Trump held a rally today at the site of the Coachella Music Festival, because just like Trump, Coachella brings out the worst in white people,” Colin Jost joked, after the audience cheered Trump blatantly threatening to withhold wildfire aid to California–something he did as president.
“Maybe it was the 100-degree heat, but it also brought out the weirdest in Trump,” Jost said, before cutting to Trump addressing someone in the crowd. “Abraham Lincoln, stand up,” Told told the person.
“Given your recent history at rallies,” Jost continued, “do you really want both you and Abraham Lincoln to stand up?”
Trump, a sexual abuser who is scheduled to have a Fox News town hall in front of an all-female audience next week, might have a difficult time with that, Michael Che joked: “Good luck trying to talk over all those rape whistles!”
Jost then addressed how Vance–like he did in his debate against Tim Walz–refused to say that Trump lost the 2020 election. Vance was given five chances to do so in a recent interview with the New York Times, at one point saying, “And I’ve answered your question with another question.”
Jost imagined what happened next: “Vance offered to move the interview under a bridge so he could answer it in the form of a riddle.”
“You can’t answer questions with questions,” Jost added. “If a cop asks, ‘Have you been drinking?’ you can’t ask him, ‘Have you been drinking–ossficer?”
