Meghan Markle‘s two children made a rare appearance on her Instagram account this week, as the Duchess of Sussex filmed them (albeit from behind) baking thumbprint cookies at home. The short clip gave fans and followers a glimpse into the Duchess’ home life, and a peek at Lilibet and Archie, her kids with Prince Harry.
The kids are mentioned but do not appear in Markle’s new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan,” but the Duchess alluded to life with Archie in a children’s book she authored in 2021 (Lilibet was born that year).
The Bench was an instant New York Times bestseller when it was released four years ago, with the book capturing the special bond between a father and son, as seen through the mother’s eyes. The title of the book refers to different (physical) benches that the father in the story sits on, as he experiences different phases of his child’s life, from birth to first steps to first bike rides.
From publisher Random House, the 40-page picture book features beautiful watercolor illustrations from Caldecott-winning artist Christian Robinson, along with simple, rhyming prose from Markle.
As Random House notes, The Bench “touchingly captures the evolving and expanding relationship between father and son and reminds us of the many ways that love can take shape and be expressed in a modern family.
While the book isn’t outwardly about Prince Harry and Archie — indeed the publisher notes state that The Bench gives readers a look at “enduring moments between a diverse group of fathers and sons” — it’s hard to deny the connection: the pages show off a red-haired father sporting an army uniform (reminiscent of Harry’s years in the Armed Forces) and the Duchess of Sussex even dedicates the book to her husband and son, writing that this is “for the man and the boy who make my heart go pump-pump.”
First released in 2021, Markle’s book is back in stock and on sale right now at Amazon. You can also listen to an audiobook version, narrated by the Duchess herself through Audible. The audiobook download is on sale for $3.94, but you can also listen to Markle reading her children’s book for free with a free trial to Audible here.
