Skillet Chocolate Chip Cookie

A skillet cookie (also known as a pizookie) is exactly what it sounds like… a giant chocolate chip cookie that is baked in a cast-iron skillet! Instead of small, individual cookies, you have this giant one to share! I love to serve it family-style with some homemade ice cream on top! And you guys, eating a cookie like this will give you a whole new appreciation for hot and fresh! A chocolate chip cookie that you can serve so hot that the ice cream just melts on top is the absolute best!

With an ooey-gooey center and crispy edges, this cookie is absolutely delicious! And, you can switch it up and make it your own! Try using chocolate chips, M&M’s, nuts, or anything that you love to make this cookie exactly what you want! Not only can you change up its deliciousness, but this cookie is also so easy. You just press the dough into your cast iron skillet and pop it in your oven! The hardest part is waiting for it to bake! If you can eat it straight out of the pan, my family goes crazy over it so this is a winner at our house!

Ingredients in a Skillet Cookie

This homemade chocolate chip skillet cookie sounds fancy but is actually the easiest of all the cookies in my opinion! You don’t have to scoop anything and you just put all of the dough right into one pan! See the recipe card below for exact measurements.

  • Butter: Butter that is unsalted and softened at room temperature will work the best to mix in.
  • Brown sugar: Make sure to pack your brown sugar nto the measuring cup!
  • Granulated sugar: All cookies need sugar for their amazing sweetness!
  • Eggs: These bind the ingredients together creating a base for the dough.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds a flavor to the sweetness.
  • Flour: All purpose flour will be what takes this from a batter to a dough.
  • Baking soda: Helps the cookie stay soft and not chewy.
  • Baking powder: This will make the large cookie stay together without having to add a liquid.
  • Salt: This will bring out all of the delicious flavors
  • Chocolate Chips or Chunks: Use these to take this recipe up a notch and create that melt in your mouth delicious taste!

How to Make a Skillet Cookie

Easier than your everyday chocolate chip cookies, you will love switching things up with this recipe! Eating it hot and straight out of the pan is an experience in itself! You will love this cookie!

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 350°. Have a 10 inch cast iron skillet ready for the cookie dough when it’s done.
  2. Combine sugars and wet ingredients: In a large bowl combine the butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar and beat with a hand mixer or a stand mixer until fluffy. Add in the eggs and vanilla and mix until combined.
  3. Whisk in dry ingredients: In a medium bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand until evenly distributed in the dough.
  4. Press and bake: Press the cookie dough evenly into the cast iron skillet and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the cookie is just barely golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool for about 5-10 minutes.
  5. Add toppings: Top the warm cookie with ice cream and enjoy eating it right out of the pan! Be careful because the pan will still be very hot.

Baking Tips for Homemade Skillet Cookie

Everyone loves a warm chocolate chip cookie and this one is a crowd-pleaser! It’s great fun to sit around the table and enjoy this oversized dessert together.

  • Use room temperature ingredients: Set your wet ingredients out before so that they are room temperature! This takes a little foresight, but will yield a much smoother batter. The ingredients will blend better and your skillet cookie will have great fluffy texture!
  • Seasoned Pan: Make sure the cast iron skillet you choose to use has already been seasoned. If it hasn’t been well seasoned (which makes it nonstick) then go ahead and give the pan and good spray of cooking spray before putting the cookie dough in it.
  • Golden brown: Cast iron pans retain a LOT of heat! The cookie will continue to bake even after it has been removed from the oven. Because of this, it’s important to remove the cookie from the oven when it has just barely started to turn golden brown. Otherwise, your cookie may get overcooked!
  • Pick your toppings: Skillet cookies can act like a great base for an ice cream sundae! So, don’t be shy with those toppings! You can use ice cream of any flavor, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, nuts, M&Ms…get creative and load it up!

Storing Leftover Chocoalte Chip Skillet Cookie

Skillet cookies are best when you can eat them right out of the oven! But sometimes our eyes are bigger than our stomachs! So, if you happen to have some leftover, here is how you can best store it.

  • Room temperature: Let the cookie cool. Place it in an airtight container and leave on your counter for 1-2 days.
  • Refrigerator: If you topped the cookie with ice cream or whipped cream, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 days.
