When we first heard a preview of Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves’ new album, Hurricane Clarice (Free Dirt Records, out March 25) we were floored. Their clawhammer banjo fiddle music is haunting, meditative and calls for repeated listening. It’s somehow both traditional and forward-thinking. So we’re proud to present the video of the pair performing the album’s beautiful title track.
Allison and Tatiana recorded Hurricane Clarice last year amid an historic heatwave in Portland, Oregon. Producer Phil Cook came up with the idea of weaving in quotes from each musician’s grandmother into the project. It’s definitely not your typical banjo/old-time fare.
The couple gave us their backstory in this video: “’Hurricane Clarice’ captures our love of instrumental banjo-fiddle music and combines the original title track with our rendition of John Morgan Salyer’s version of the traditional fiddle song ‘Brushy Fork of John’s Creek’. ‘ We love making music together in a duo format and find there is so much room for flexibility and spontaneous musical reactivity.”
