Nicolas Hurt is a guitarist and music teacher from Austin, Texas. Although he grew up listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan licks and eventually played rock in various Austin bands, he now focuses on acoustic music.
In this video, Nicolas performs “Five Preludes” by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos.
The guitar he plays was built by Rafael Granados, a luthier from Paracho, Mexico, a city known for building stringed instruments. (Long time fj Readers may remember our picture of Paracho in our 9th birthdayth edition). The guitar features a lattice-braced cedar top and cocobolo back and sides.
“Years before I got my Rafael Granados, my first experience with a nylon-string instrument was playing my grandfather’s guitar,” says Hurt. “At the time, all I knew about this guitar was that it was old, bought by my grandfather in a small town in Mexico around 1968, and had belonged to my uncle when he was a kid. It was loaned to me and I played it for several years before switching to the Granados that I play in the video. Recently I was able to play my grandfather’s guitar again and was surprised to see that the label also had the name “R. Granados.’ I texted Rafael, sent him some photos, and found out that my grandfather’s old guitar was built by Rafael’s father and mentor, Ramon Granados! So, without knowing it, I played instruments from several generations of the Granados family. I think that’s cool.”
