Making your own DIY body scrub is one of the easiest DIY projects anyone can do. I love making DIY body scrubs for myself, but it also makes a really cute homemade gift.

The body scrub is used to exfoliate your skin, which means you gently slough off old, dead skin cells.

It’s great for making your skin feel fresh, make-up applying smoother and moisturizing products penetrating better. Exfoliating is also important when preparing for a spray tan, for example.

While it’s a healthy practice, don’t overdo it. Read Is Your Exfoliation Routine Harming Your Skin? for more information on peeling.

We’ve been sharing DIY body scrub recipes for years, so I wanted to put together this ultimate guide for anyone just starting out. Body Scrub = Scrub + Oil + Fragrances. It is really that easy!

Again, the basic formula for making your own body scrub is:

Oil + Scrub + Oil + Fragrances

Exfoliation Options:

  • Sugar – Caster sugar, sometimes called superfine sugar, is great because it’s finer ground than granulated sugar. Although regular granulated sugar works well too.
  • Salt – Superfine or pink Himalayan salt works well.
  • coffee grounds
  • Oats – ground or whole will work
  • Nuts – well ground, these work best as an adjunct to other scrubs
  • Dried Flowers – ground up, these work best as a complement to other scrubs

Fragrances & other add-ins:

frequently asked Questions

Which is better, sugar or salt scrub?

Sugar, especially powdered sugar, is gentler on your skin. So if you’re unsure how your skin will react or plan on using a body scrub frequently, sugar may be a better choice.

What are the basic ingredients of a body scrub?

Scrub + Oil + Fragrance = Body Scrub. So this could be as simple as powdered sugar, coconut oil, and a few drops of essential oil. But there are many ways to use this basic formula to make a body scrub.

How long does homemade sugar scrub last?

If stored well in a sealed container, it will keep for at least six months.

How to store the DIY body scrub:

As long as you store your homemade body scrub in a tightly sealed container to keep out moisture or other environmental elements, it can last up to six months.
