Sometimes you wanna go where everyone knows your name. And sometimes you wanna own the entire bar, which is why someone paid $675,000 for the bar from the hit sitcom “Cheers” at Heritage Auctions, June 3.
The bar was featured in all 275 episodes of “Cheers” and was the singular artifact that all main cast members and guest stars alike gathered around during 11 seasons of one of the greatest television comedies of all time. The bar is from TV memorabilia enthusiast James Comisar’s incredible collection that all sold through Heritage.
In the fall of 1982, NBC premiered “Cheers,” a smartly written show about a bar owned by a retired Boston Red Sox relief pitcher named Sam Malone and featuring a cast of characters known today on a first-name basis: Norm, Cliff, Carla, Diane, Woody, Frasier and Rebecca, among others.
By 1993, at the end of its run, “Cheers” was earning a now unheard-of 26 million viewers per week. For the most part, people sat around the bar and talked. Today, some lucky bidder can do the same.
