A frappe is a blended or whipped coffee drink that can contain different flavors and is often served with whipped cream. While they’re popular around the world, here in the US when I hear mocha frappé, I think of the McDonald’s version.
And while this is essentially a homemade version of it, I like that I can customize it a bit more to my liking.
What I love about this mocha frappé recipe is that it’s so easy and quick to make. It’s refreshing but also feels like a treat and only requires four ingredients plus whipped cream for the topping.

Ingredients
- Espresso – I like to freeze it in ice cubes
- Crystalized white sugar – or another sweetener such as simple syrup
- Milk – I like whole milk, but you can use oat milk or any other kind you like
- chocolate syrup
- Whipped cream as topping
How to make a mocha frappé
Freeze the espresso shots in ice cubes. My espresso machine makes 3-4 ice cubes per shot. And I usually use 6-8 frozen espresso cubes (2 shots) for one serving.
You can also freeze very strong coffee if you don’t want to use espresso.
In a blender, combine the frozen coffee, sugar, milk and chocolate syrup. Stir everything until smooth.
Drizzle some chocolate syrup into the glass and then pour in the mocha frappé. Cover with whipped cream.
Tips and Substitutions
- If you forgot or don’t want to freeze your espresso/coffee beforehand, let it cool down a bit after brewing (put it in the fridge for a few minutes). Then follow the recipe but add 6-8 ice cubes per serving. Yes, this will dilute the coffee in your mocha frappé, but it will have a similar texture and consistency and will still be delicious.
- If you prefer your mocha frappé to be less sweet and more coffee-like, feel free to omit the sugar in this recipe. Sometimes the only sweetener I add is the chocolate syrup and I think it’s great.
- You can easily change the flavor of this frappe by using a different syrup like white chocolate or caramel.
- If you want to make this dairy-free, you can easily do it by just using non-dairy milk and whipped cream.
