The Royal Mint has struck a chord with music fans worldwide by releasing a commemorative £5 coin honoring legendary musician Paul McCartney. The former Beatle described the tribute as a “huge honor,” reflecting on the unexpected journey from childhood to becoming one of the most celebrated artists in history. The coin marks the first in the collection designed to spotlight McCartney’s groundbreaking career. There are eight previous releases in the Mint’s ongoing “Music Legends” series, including Queen, Elton John, Dame Shirley Bassey, and David Bowie.
The coin’s reverse is an homage to McCartney’s exceptional legacy. It features his iconic “magic piano” (with a series of piano notes personally chosen by McCartney himself) and his Höfner violin bass guitar. The design also incorporates the Wings logo, paying tribute to his post-Beatles band. His signature ties the various elements together. Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, noted that McCartney was involved throughout the design process, adding a personal touch to this tribute. The obverse bears the effigy of King Charles III, marking it as one of the first major releases in the Music Legends series under the new reign.
For collectors, the options are as diverse as McCartney’s musical catalog. Prices start at £15.50 for base-metal editions, while the colorized coins in precious metals are priced higher. The most exclusive editions start at £520, topping at £5,890. Early next year, fans will also have the chance to bid on a signed gold edition of the coin, weighing an impressive 5kg (11lb). This custom coin, which required over 250 hours to create—including three days of hand polishing—was signed by McCartney during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris. The bespoke coin will be auctioned along with four silver 5kg versions of the coin.
The Royal Mint crafted a unique plectrum-shaped coin for McCartney, inspired by his early use of pennies as guitar picks. Produced from sustainable gold recovered from e-waste, this unique piece underscores the Mint’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. “Our coins recognize the greatest icons and events in British history, so it’s fitting that Paul McCartney’s remarkable music career is now celebrated on an official UK coin,” said Morgan.
From his childhood dreams to his global fame, McCartney’s journey is immortalized in this commemorative release. He noted, “It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.” Now, fans and collectors alike can obtain a piece of his extraordinary legacy.
