Ingredients

  • Fresh Ginger Root – You’ll need about one pound of fresh ginger.
  • Lemons – This recipe calls for six lemons (or organic lemon juice).
  • Honey – Choose local honey or agave for your shots.
  • Water – You will also need some fresh, cool water for this recipe.

Storage Containers – You have several options for how to store your ginger shots in airtight containers. The first option is individual containers. I used this set of eight 2-ounce bottles. You can also store your shots in one large batch (such as a large sealed mason jar) and pour servings into individual glasses as needed. If you go with this option, choose a sealed container that can hold at least 16 ounces.

What does a ginger shot taste like?

Homemade ginger shots taste very strongly of ginger. They definitely have a kick to them! There are also notes of lemon and honey in this recipe. The flavor is so strong that it is best served as a shot instead of a drink (easier to slam it than to sip). If you’re hesitant about the strong flavor, you can add some pineapple juice, orange juice or apple juice to bring it down a few notches.

How to Make

Begin by preparing your ingredients. Juice your lemons. I used a hand juicer to juice my six lemons (sliced in half) directly into the blender.

Next, peel all the ginger and chop it into small chunks.

Add the lemon juice, ginger, water and honey to a high-speed blender.

Pulse until the ingredients are fully blended.

Use a fine-mesh strainer and cheesecloth to strain the substance into a container. Squeeze the cheesecloth so only dry ginger fiber remains. Discard that to the side and continue this process until all the liquid is double strained into a new container.

Use a mini funnel to pour two ounces of ginger shot into each bottle. Serve immediately or refrigerate.

Tips for Making

  • More ingredients to add – You can add turmeric, cayenne pepper, black pepper, apple cider vinegar or other fruit and vegetable juice to your shot for added benefits and flavor variations. You may also swap the water for coconut water for added electrolytes. If you use spices, start with a pinch and add more to taste.
  • Time saving hack – If you want to save time, you may skip peeling the ginger and blend it without peeling. This is the most time consuming part of the recipe.
  • Don’t have cheesecloth? If you don’t have cheesecloth, you can use a clean cotton kitchen towel instead.
  • Vegan Option – For a vegan-friendly option, swap out the honey for maple syrup or agave.
